Crimes and Misdemeanors

from Professor Levy played by Martin S. Bergmann, a New York University clinical professor in psychology, in the movie Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by Woody Allen.

“You will notice that what we are aiming at when we fall in love is a very strange paradox. The paradox consists of the fact that when we fall in love we are seeking to re-find all or some of the people to whom we were attached as children. On the other hand we ask of our beloved to correct all of the wrongs that these early parents or siblings inflicted on us. So that love contains in it a contradiction, the attempt to return to the past and the attempt to undo the past.

But we must always remember that when we are born we need a great deal of love to persuade us to stay in life. Once we get that love, it usually lasts us. But the universe is a pretty cold place. It’s we who invest it with our feelings. And under certain conditions, we feel that the thing isn’t worth it anymore.

We’re all faced throughout our lives with agonizing decisions, moral choices. Some are on a grand scale, most of these choices are on lesser points. But we define ourselves by the choices we have made. We are, in fact, the sum total of our choices. Events unfold so unpredictably, so unfairly, Human happiness does not seem to be included in the design of creation. it is only we, with our capacity to love that give meaning to the indifferent universe. And yet, most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying and even try to find joy from simple things, like their family, their work, and from the hope that future generations might understand more.”

Happy Women's Day

Happy Women's Day for all those lovely smart independent ladies and for to all gents trying to support them in every step of the way...

Lord, I have a problem."
"What's the problem, Eve?"
I know that you created me and provided this beautiful garden and all of
these wonderful animals, as well as that hilarious comedic snake, but I'm
just not happy."
And why is that Eve?"
"Lord, I am lonely, and I'm sick to death of apples"
"Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man for you."
"Man? What is that, Lord?"
"A flawed creature, with many bad habits and traits. He'll lie, cheat and
be vain; all in all, he'll give you a hard time. But he'll be bigger,
faster and will like to hunt and kill things. I'll create him in such a
way that he will satisfy your physical needs. He will be witless and will
revel in childish things like fighting and kicking a ball about. He won't
be as smart as you, so he will also need your advice to think properly."
"Sounds great," says Eve, with ironically raised eyebrows, "but what's the
catch, Lord?"
"Well...You can have him on one condition."
"And what's that, Lord?"
"As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant and self-admiring...So you'll have to
let him believe that I made him first. And it will have to be our little secret..."
